Deirdre Murphy and Les Ray formed the original acoustic duo in 2012, and since then Red Velvet have evolved through various personnel changes into today’s five-piece folk band with elements of blues, jazz and country in their unique sound. They mostly perform their own originals: thoughtful, witty, politically engaged songs written by Les, often in partnership with Deirdre. Their covers are for the most part songs by their favourite Irish singer-songwriters and from the tradition.
The key elements of Red Velvet’s style are vocalist Deirdre’s passionate performance, virtuoso keyboard and lead guitar playing by Gene and fine three-part harmonies.

Always a joy to welcome Pat Crilly back to the club. One of the best live performers on the local scene, Pat is a superb songwriter and a talented singer and instrumentalist. Born in Ireland, raised in Scotland, living in England, Pat spent 12 years in Norway and writes songs about places and folks he’s met in his life from Cork to the Congo and Norway to Nova Scotia. Playing his original brand of bluesy folk, mostly in DADGAD tuning, he loves performing and songwriting, and it shows.
“A great live act , Pat reminds me of Roger Chapman and Feargal Sharkey mixed with Peter Gabriel , songs in that vein too. Quirky, bluesy, and deep as Loch water”, Get Rhythm Magazine.
Seasick Steve commented “This guy’s good!” after hearing Pat at London’s 12 Bar Club.
