Red Velvet + Pat Crilly

June 17, 2026

7:30 pm Free Entry

Deirdre Murphy and Les Ray formed the original acoustic duo in 2012, and since then Red Velvet have evolved through various personnel changes into today’s five-piece folk band with elements of blues, jazz and country in their unique sound. They mostly perform their own originals: thoughtful, witty, politically engaged songs written by Les, often in partnership with Deirdre. Their covers are for the most part songs by their favourite Irish singer-songwriters and from the tradition.
The key elements of Red Velvet’s style are vocalist Deirdre’s passionate performance, virtuoso keyboard and lead guitar playing by Gene and fine three-part harmonies.

Always a joy to welcome Pat Crilly back to the club. One of the best live performers on the local scene, Pat is a superb songwriter and a talented singer and instrumentalist. Born in Ireland, raised in Scotland, living in England, Pat spent 12 years in Norway and writes songs about places and folks he’s met in his life from Cork to the Congo and Norway to Nova Scotia. Playing his original brand of bluesy folk, mostly in DADGAD tuning, he loves performing and songwriting, and it shows.

“A great live act , Pat reminds me of Roger Chapman and Feargal Sharkey mixed with Peter Gabriel , songs in that vein too. Quirky, bluesy, and deep as Loch water”, Get Rhythm Magazine.

Seasick Steve commented “This guy’s good!” after hearing Pat at London’s 12 Bar Club.

John Ward Trio + Rhys Wilson

July 1, 2026

7:30 pm Free Entry

We’re pleased to welcome back to the club The John Ward Trio. John has achieved an excellent reputation as a writer of powerful, thought-provoking and witty songs that draw upon his life in a gritty port town, as well as his wider travels in the world, and often capture the spirit of the times.

John performs in folk clubs, festivals and theatres across the UK and beyond, mainly with wife, Lynne, and band mate, Les Woodley, as the imaginatively titled John Ward Trio! This line-up delivers powerful 3-part harmonies, with acoustic guitar, bodhran, harmonica, double bass, mandolin, accordion and recorder to bring a fuller sound to John’s excellent songs. The Trio also draws on its wider repertoire of traditional and contemporary folk tunes and songs, many of them suited to communal singing. The Trio’s performances are authentic and heartfelt, engaging audiences with their choice of material, thoughtful arrangements, versatility and humour, not to mention John’s blistering bodhran solos, which all blend to delight and entertain folk audiences in intimate venues and bigger stages alike.

Rhys Wilson is a regular performer at the club and his singing, songwriting and guitar playing are always appreciated by our lovely audience.

Our regular club nights take place at The Orange Tree, Baldock, Norton Road, SG7 5AW every other Wednesday and are free unless otherwise stated. However do please bring some cash for the whip round for the performers – they always need our support! Doors open at 7:00pm, music starts at 7:30pm.
